Rescues must cross check the microchip database registration on all ‘surrendered’, ‘hand over’ or ‘seized’ pets and scan all strays thoroughly. Once a pet has been rehomed it is a costly and complex procedure, resulting in the fact you may not get your microchipped pet back.
This is a copied post about a dog given to a rescue, which is called a ‘hand over’

“Thank you everyone for your support over Paddy. He’s a lovely boy and there’s no doubt in my mind we did the right thing by him.
We went over every aspect of what had happened, and we both ended up with exactly the same opinion, there was NO way Paddy was going back to the people his chip was registered to. I can’t add any more than has already said, other than I took him for a health check a few days after bringing him to mine, and had him checked for a chip. The vet gave me the number and I rang the chip company to check it out. They wouldn’t give me any details of his previous owners, but they assured me he’d not been reported stolen or missing. And he hadn’t, until the vet assistant decided in her wisdom to scan him while he was in for his neutering, and phone the owners to tell them “I think I have your dog here”, then refuse to neuter him, refuse to let me pick him up (until I turned up and insisted), and give my telephone number to his so called concerned owners. The rest is history now, thank goodness.”
They are also saying the vet nurse should be reprimanded for scanning and calling the registered owner!
The question is should rescues be allowed to decide whether a dog is rehomed despite being registered to another owner?
