Trevor Cooper chair of the Microchip Trade Association (MTA) and DogLaw expert, organised the meeting: MICROCHIPPING ‘The Next Steps’ It was a good afternoon with interesting presentations.
1pm Opening address by Trevor Cooper on behalf of the MTA
Brief introductions to each of the speakers will be provided by Clarissa Baldwin former CEO Dogs Trust and credited for ‘A dog is for life not just for Christmas’ slogan.
1.15pm Barry Webb (Battersea)
Battersea talking about stray dog stats. Increase in microchipped dogs but microchip contact details and unregistered microchips are the main issue.
1.35pm Peter Scott (veterinary surgeon).
He spoke about the failings in the industry and aimed a lot of issues onto the databases.
Namely the Veterinary Database which can give a stolen pet a new identity and the American Databases that pops up first on Google search for microchip databases: uk pet registry, its not compliant and will not be shared when searching for a microchip because its not Defra compliant ! Defra can’t stop them! They charge people £15, and those people could be fined £500 for not being on a compliant Database.
1.50pm Debbie Matthews (Vets Get Scanning)
My presentation:- http://bit.ly/30orrbj
2.05pm Mark Callis (LB Wandsworth)
This man is brilliant, he was a member of the Microchipping Alliance and was the first council to make it compulsory for all their tenants to register their dogs on to their own database. Keeps strict controls. I wish this was rolled out across the country.
2.25pm Jacqui Cuff & Madison Rogers (Cats Protection).
Putting the case forward for compulsory microchipping of cats.
2.45pm BREAK tea / coffee
3.00pm Daniella Dos Santos, British Veterinary Association (BVA).
She said BVA are moving forward on scanning and that they are talking to Vets Get Scanning. They are seeing an increase in microchipped pets but also see a number of stray pets with unregistered microchips.
BVA are going to push scanning during National Microchipping Month in June, but they will let us know in advance. Creating a poster for vets.
Daniela referred to my presentation, including the petition for Tuk and said if they can get vets scanning and cross checking microchip registration, Tuk would not have been put to sleep.
This is a huge step forward for us all.
3.15pm Jacquie Easton (Kennel Club)
3.30pm Phil Alder (DEFRA)
He only arrived at tea break, so missed some really important presentations. However, I was prepared as I’ve seen this before when Defra arrive at the end of a meeting! I had my power point printed out, with Dan’s paper, the Pet (Theft) Bill, and copies of Beverley’ coverage before and after the debate and gave it to him before he left.
He started his talk by saying, “I thought we had finished with the regulations, but maybe not!”
He is interested in people views on Microchipping!!!
3.45pm Panel discussion with Daniella, Jacquie, Mark, Phil and Clarissa. Trevor will chair and keep control!
Most questions were aimed to the databases.
