After Rosemary Kind of Tholthorpe, North Yorkshire, took her two year old Swiss Mountain dog Shadow to Switzerland to mate, she expected to return to England with her.
Shadow got stranded in Calais when Rosemary was told that Shadow’s microchip, identifying her and proving her innoculations to travel, had failed, and the information could not be retrieved from manufacturer Bayer. This meant, to Rosemary and pregnant Shadow’s dismay, that Shadow would have to stay on the continent for six months while the rules of the travelling of pets were relaxed.
Manufacturer Bayer, however, had got in touch with Mrs Kind saying they had managed to obtain the information from the chip, and could go home. Rosemary said: ‘I am delighted that I can go and get her. It really didn’t bear thinking about, being away from home when her litter is born.’
Bayer spokesperson said: ‘We’re very pleased obviously that Mrs Kind’s dog can go home. It’s extremely rare for this to happen; this is a very robust way of identifying a pet, which of course is very necessary. In the rare event it does happen, we try out best to work with the owner for a positive outcome.’
