With his big dark eyes and black button nose, Archie the Norfolk terrier has an irresistible charm.
Too irresistible, in fact, for the little dog has been snatched from outside a Marks & Spencer in a well-to-do area as his owner shopped inside.
It is believed a woman untied him from railings, picked him up and simply walked off with him tucked under her arm.
Dognapped: Norfolk terrier Archie was snatched from outside the M&S branch in Hampstead Heath, north London, on Monday
Distraught: Actress Shelley King has been putting up posters around Hampstead Heath appealing for information after Archie was stolenLast night his distraught owner, actress Shelley King, appealed for the return of her beloved pet, which was the inspiration for the canine character Bobby in best-selling children’s book Artichoke Hearts by Miss King’s sister-in-law Sita Brahmachari.
Miss King, of Hampstead, North London, said: ‘I’m desperately worried. Archie is the cutest looking thing, but he is no puppy. He is 13, has a slipped disc and a bladder infection.
‘He is on a special diet and needs medication. It’s imperative we get him back as soon as possible.’
Police are studying the store’s CCTV footage, and missing dog websites have been alerted, as have vets within a 30-mile radius.
The real-life drama unfolded around 5.30pm on Monday outside the M&S in Pond Street, Hampstead. Miss King, 57, whose credits include The Bill, Holby City and Silent Witness as well as roles at the National Theatre, had popped in for some groceries after taking Archie for a walk.
‘I tied him to the railings outside by his lead. I was in the shop for about eight or ten minutes and I could see him through the windows. I kept looking to check he was OK,’ she said.
‘The only time I couldn’t see him was when I went to the checkout to pay. Then I came out and suddenly he had gone.
‘It was my worst nightmare as I don’t usually leave him outside. My partner or I usually stand with him.’
At the time her civil partner Trilby James, 49, a director and actress, was at work. Since the disappearance of Archie, who is identichipped, they have put up posters and offered a reward.
Norfolk terriers can be worth up to £500 at breeding age but Archie is unlikely to be so valuable because of his advanced years.
And Miss King had a warning for the dog-napper: ‘Archie can be feisty with people he doesn’t know. If they get too lovey-dovey with him, he will snap sometimes.’
