Alison Klippenstein Just wanted you all to know that after a heart wrenching battle, our lovely moggy is finally home! I collected him from the vets in Cheltenham this evening. The people who had him threatened us with the RSPCA and legal action and even offered to buy him from us for £1000, but luckily the police were insistent he was returned less they face charges of theft. Our much loved pet is now curled up beside me as I type this, purring incredibly loudly! Oh how I’d missed that! Thank you all for your kind words and support!
Original post:- Our much loved cat went missing in November 2013. We were informed, in January 2014, by the Identichip microchip database Anibase, that he had been found some 50 miles away from our home, Hungerford, Berkshire and that the current carers had applied for a change of ownership. We refused this request and asked that they contact us to arrange the safe return of our pet.
The current carers have refused to contact us. The microchip company cannot give out their contact information due to the Data Protection Act. The Police do not take cat theft particularly seriously. I am at a loss as to what to do next. My son and I are heartbroken at the thought of not seeing our 8yr old friend again.
Amazingly, after contacting many vets about our cat, one in Cheltenham contacted me yesterday to inform me that our cat was bought into her surgery in November. She had discovered the microchip and told the current carers to report him found and arrange his safe return. They refused and said they would take their business elsewhere. Again, the data protection act prevents her from giving me their contact details, but she is devastated at not being able to help and is happy to cooperate with the police. I have passed her details onto them and can now only wait.
If I have learnt anything from this whole upsetting ordeal, it is that the flaws in the microchipping system, and the companies that run them, have caused us nearly as much heartache and frustration as loosing our cat in the first place.
